Bolton Abbey - Strid Wood - The Aqueduct

{photo via here}
We dared the four hour walk around the beautiful ruins of the 12th Century priory (apparently haunted by an Augustinian monk) and then into the ancient oak woodland until we stopped to look at the Strid itself. The Strid refers to the one place in the broad River Wharf that dramatically narrows so it looks as if you could just jump across with one stride to the other side. But the scary thing is that no one who has fallen into the water has come out of it alive - the water is that dangerous.
