Protected Sausage
This is one story in the news I actually enjoyed yesterday!
England's Cumberland Sausage is enjoying a champagne moment as it is now protected under European law from geographically inaccurate imitations. If its not from Cumbria, it can not be called a Cumberland sausage!
The sausage now joins the ranks of other British regional foods as Stilton cheese, Melton Mowbray pork pies and Cornish clotted cream.
Origins of the Cumberland Sausage
Despite most people thinking the coiled Cumberland sausage is completely British, it is thought to have been created by German miners who worked in the region in the 16th century and wanted to eat something that reminded them more of the sausages they got at home.
