Nos Galan Gaeaf (Halloween)

October 31st is the day before winter begins in Wales. In this time of transition the worlds of the ancestors and the gods are supposed to be at their closest. It is the night when spirits walk abroad amongst us. People should avoid burial grounds, crossroads, entrances to footpaths and stiles as spirits gather.

Ancient Celtic customs for October 31st
  • Fires were lit to drive spirits away from homes. After the bonfire was started each family member threw in a stone marked with their name. In the morning, when the embers had cooled you had to find your stone and enjoy good luck. But if your stone was missing you might possibly be dead within a year.
  • Yr Hwch Ddu Gwta (the tail-less black sow) - Mostly seen in North Wales and the scariest spirit of the night. She roamed the fields with a headless woman.
Stay safe tonight!
