Movie : Cave of the Yellow Dog (Die Höhle des gelben Hundes)

I watched a beautiful movie by Mongolian director Byambasuren Davaa who is also responsible for one of my favourite movies The story of the weeping camel.

This is a story of a little nomadic girl who finds a puppy in a cave. Against the wishes of her parents she becomes attached to the dog and hides him from the eyes of her father. Only when the young dog, Zocher, protects the life of the baby do the parents finally see his good soul and he is accepted into the family.

What a simple story but with a lot of depth to it and a feeling of authenticity. I loved the fact that the family portrayed were not professional actors at all, but a real nomadic family. The children are so independent and resilient at an early age, you can't help but compare them to the children in the West who are wrapped in cotton wool and transported everywhere by car . The cinematography of the Mongolian steppes was absolutely breathtaking and I adored the small details of their daily life - from breakfast time to the packing away of all their worldly possessions as they prepare to move on.

After watching it, you can't help but think that yes, though life so close to nature may be difficult there is so much more beauty and joy in a simple existence. However, I don't think my boys would be content playing with sheep dung bricks of instead of  Lego!

I give this gentle but not Hollywood-style sentimental movie 9/10.
