Everyday double chocolate loaf cake

Did you know that tomorrow is the last day of Chocolate week? Well I just had to make something in honour of this most marvellous of foodstuffs.

Some days you don't want anything to fussy and elaborate - just a slice of rich, moist chocolate cake.

Ingredients

  • 180g butter
  • 180g sugar
  • 140g self-raising flour
  • 80g ground almonds
  • 3 eggs
  • half teaspoon baking powder
  • 100ml milk
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 50g chocolate chips
Method
  • Preheat oven to 160C (140C fan) and grease and line a 900g (2lb) loaf tin with a long strip of baking paper. Cream together the butter and sugar using an electric whisk. Add the eggs one at a time before adding the flour, almonds, milk, baking powder and cocoa powder until smooth.  Stir in the chocolate chips and pour into your loaf tin. Bake for 45-55 minutes until risen and a skewer that has been poked through the centre comes out clean.

Interesting chocolate facts*

  1. Chocolate is the one area that has defied the economic downturn. 81% of British people eat chocolate at least once a week.
  2. Chocolate arrived in England during the 1650s and was served as a drink in London's new chocolate houses. Hot chocolate was supposedly medicinal and mood enhancing.
